For most Australians, Superannuation (super for short) begins when they start work. Your employer will make contributions for you over your working life. From 1 July 2024, your employer is required to pay 11.5% of your salary (formally called ordinary time earnings). This percentage will rise to 12% from 1 July 2025.
You also can make contributions to your super and some of those contributions can be tax deductible. However, there are limits on what you can put in and what you can claim a tax deduction for. So make sure you understand the rules before you act.
For those people who want even more control over how their money is managed and invested, they can do that through a self-managed super fund. Self-managed super isn’t for everyone, but there are some real advantages to this vehicle other types of funds.
Why is superannuation important?
Superannuation is a critical part of financial planning because it ensures you have a steady income stream after retirement. Unlike other savings, superannuation benefits from employer contributions, your contributions and investment compounding over time. This makes super a powerful tool for building a substantial retirement fund. Additionally, superannuation funds often tax advantages over other types of investment options, which can also enhance your savings over time.
Properly managing your superannuation can mean the difference between a comfortable retirement and financial uncertainty. By investing appropriately in superannuation, you are essentially securing your future, ensuring that you can maintain your lifestyle and cover essential expenses without financial stress.

"Without doubt, seeking comprehensive financial advice from Dale at EKB Financial Advisers has been the best financial decision I have ever made. Dale was recommended as a highly educated, skilled and experienced financial adviser. He spent many hours with me carefully listening, asking the right questions and fully understanding my needs, life goals and plans. He worked with me through every aspect and how I can achieve these plans relative to my financial position, both in the short and long-term. Specifically, Dale advised me on the most effective strategies to manage a family inheritance, invest long-term in superannuation, develop an investment portfolio outside of super. He also provided considered guidance and advice on all aspects related to my estate planning including enduring powers of attorney, Wills and binding death nominations. I could not recommend Dale more highly. I will recommend him to family, friends and colleagues without hesitation knowing they will receive the very best and carefully considered advice. Dale is a gentleman and a very nice person. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. Thank-you Dale. I look forward to a long-term partnership."
